Voice for New Jersey is an affiliation of individuals and organizations who are dedicated to improving broadcast media coverage in New Jersey. Our goal is to increase media attention on New Jersey and improve the quality of the media coverage that NJ receives.

New Jersey is one of only two states that does not have a major televison network affiliate. It is the ONLY state that does not have a Designated Market Area (DMA) for broadcast media. Coverage is divided between the New York and Philadelphia markets. As a result, New Jersey suffers from:

>   Lack of State Identity
As far as broadcast media coverage goes, there is little that the citizens of New Jersey have in common beyond the color of their license plates. People in the southern part of the state get information and news with a Philadelphia focus. In the northern part of the state, the news has a New York flavor. New Jerseyans know more about New York's Mayor Bloomberg and Philadelphia's Mayor Nutter than they do about their own political leaders.

>   Little Examination of Elected Officials
Without significant television coverage, there is a minimal "Fourth Estate" that provides a valid set of checks and balances for New Jersey's elected officials. While print media is active in New Jersey, many residents continue to get their news through television. In the absence of substantial political coverage, New Jersey's policy makers are able to make vital decisions regarding the states future with very little public scrutiny.

>   Limited Community awareness
There are nearly nine million residents of New Jersey. The state's lack of a network affiliate, however, means that residents of towns as large as 100,000 people are often not aware of important news taking place in own their communities.
